From 10th October, in the museum café of the Polderhuis in Westkapelle, the exhibition ‘Vertrouwd’ by the Westkapelle artist Lennard Hendrikse can be viewed. Lennard (22 years old) has been drawing and painting for as long as he can remember. Later, he began exploring the art of papercutting. The title of the exhibition, ‘Vertrouwd’, refers to the sense of recognition present in his work. The depicted scenes evoke memories, stories and feelings of familiarity among visitors. Lennard invites the viewer not only to look back at the past, but also to reflect on what still connects us to it today!

Inspiration from Walcheren traditional costume

For his works related to the Walcheren traditional costume, his grandmother was his source of inspiration. The memories of her and of a time when traditional dress was much more visibly present formed the starting point for a series of works in which personal memory and cultural heritage come together. Notably, the figures in his works are almost always depicted from behind. As a viewer, you are, as it were, looking over their shoulder and back at the people who wore the traditional costume. This choice aligns with the idea of looking back: at earlier generations, at traditions, and at a culture that is still familiar to many, yet slowly changing and disappearing.

Materials and techniques

Lennard works with various materials and techniques. Coloured pencil, watercolour and oil paint alternate. Each material offers a different way to give shape to ideas. During this exhibition, Lennard’s series of self‑designed papercutting art, based on the Walcheren traditional costume, is shown in full for the first time. These original works are not for sale, but cards and posters are available.
