Memorial for British liberators

Two memorials are situated on the dyke near beach Erika. These are in commemoration of 172 crewmen of British landing craft. They were killed in action on November 1, 1944 near Westkapelle during the Battle of the Scheldt. The landings near Westkapelle were part of operation Infatuate II. This was the final of the Battle of the Scheldt in order to clear the water way to Antwerp.
Every year on November 1, a commemoration service with a wreath laying ceremony is organized.

Walking to the memorial

The walk ‘Rondje Westkapelle’ leads through the forest along the creek. At the rescue station KNRM deviate a bit from the route in the direction of the beach in order to have a look at the memorials. See www.routiq.com for more walking routes.
